Parents:
We are back from a refreshing break and not skipping a beat. The kids are making wonderful progress. I hope you are pleased with their progress reports. They will be sent home Friday.
We are studying insects this week (my favorite). Although annoying at times, most insects help our gardens, vegetation, control pesky critters. It is important to teach a respect about the insects so they are not afraid and eager to squish them.
Along with insects we are learning about life cycles, Comparing and contrasting different creatures.
Questions to ask:
How many body parts does an insect have?
How many legs?
What is the life cycle of a butterfly, beetle?
Is a spider an insect?
In writing this week we wrote questions about bugs and in reading we are finding the answers.
In math we continue to work on addition, subtraction, money, and time.
If you have any questions or would like to meet with me to visit about your child’s progress report, please call me.

Upcoming events:

March 6th Picture proofs due
Picture Proofs were sent home last week. Even if you don’t want the pictures, they must be sent back.
March 14th No School (Teacher work day)
March 17th- 21st Spring Break
We are reading and studying about trees. It is interesting to learn they grow from little seeds. What else begins very small and grows tall? The responses are fun to hear.
We are working on addition and subtraction in math. Some of us are not ready for subtraction, so addition is the focus for them.
Daily we check the thermometer to see how cold it is. We make predictions for the day and chart our observations. This has been a fun activity for the class.
Continue to practice sight words and handwriting. First grade will be coming sooner than we want.

In writing we are working on using spaces in our writing and also punctuation.
In Math we are working with money. Many of us know the coins and the values. We are working with adding amounts and using various coins.
The reader coming home this week is: Dad Can Pin It On.
When your child is reading to you, please make sure they are pointing to the words and reading only the printed words. If you are reading it to them, point out common words: is, it, on.
The more they see the printed words the better they will know them. Encourage them to read, read, and read!
Thank you,

Conferences are next week. I will be meeting with each of you, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If you have not received your conference notice, please let me know.
Our Valentine’s Party will be Thursday at 12:50. Please contact Angela Bateman at 683-9866 if you would like to send something. You are welcome to attend as well. It should be a rocking good time.
We have been reading a lot in our decodable readers. Ask your child which reading group he/she is in. They are making good progress. I would like to see their writing improve. I am sending home some sample handwriting. We spend the first 15 minutes a day on hand writing, but some need more.
Thank you,
Kathleen Endsley

Parents:
Thank you for responding so quickly about conferences.
I have received most of the confirmation notes back and I look forward to meeting with each of you. If you can not make the conference time or have not received a note please let me know.
The Valentine’s Day party is coming soon. We have 24 students. Please have your child sign his/her name on all the cards. Do not address them, this will aid in handing them out quickly. Angela Bateman is planning the party. If you would like to help, please contact her.
We will celebrate our 100th day of school tomorrow. Have your child count out 100 of any object. Suggested items (from the class) pretzels, raisins, skittles, chocolates, marbles, pennies, buttons anything. We will estimate, weigh and possibly eat them.
We are writing/reading sight word phrases daily and becoming more confident in reading the sentences. Here are a few:
He said yes.
Can we go on it?
What will he do?
Look at me.
Is it for me?
Thank you,
Kathleen Endsley

We will get in groups, visit the restroom and load the bus. The earlier we leave the more time we have at the pumpkin patch.
I would like to thank you all for making time to come to conferences. I truly love talking with all of you.

Conferences are coming up next week.
Please remember your scheduled time as I have back to back conferences all three days.
If you can not remember your time or have lost your note, please let me know. I can send another home.
We will be going to the Pumpkin Patch on October 25th from 1:00 to 3:30. We will need chaperones.
The Halloween Party/Parade will be on Halloween. The parade will start at 3:15 with the party following. The children can bring a costume to wear for the parade. I am sure we will need volunteers to help the little ones change. Attached is a note from Angela Bateman, the room mother.
I would like to thank all of you who helped make the Fall Festival a huge success. The weather was beautiful and there were so many volunteers and participants.
The Sally Foster Fund Raiser is due today. Please do not feel obliged to sell for each fundraiser. Pick and choose what you like.
Pictures are tomorrow! Dress up and smile!

Parents:
Another month has rushed by. Dial Testing will be in October. More information on this will follow.
Pictures are scheduled for October 11th.
As the weather changes and the leaves begin to change I will plan a nature walk. We will explore the neighborhood and observe changes in nature as well as gather leaves, seeds and nuts.
Our annual Pumpkin Patch trip will be around the end of the month. We are still working out the details.
And the most exciting, HALLOWEEN! Wow I am already hearing of the costumes to be worn.
Don’t Forget the FALL FESTIVAL! What a great event, fun for the whole family. Plan to volunteer or just bring the family for the fun.
In Language Arts we are working on listening for the beginning sound of words.
Our theme for the week is Friends.
The word for the week is like.
Our list is growing we have been working on I, the, am, can, like.
Ask your child to act our the Word wall chants. (Hoola, Cheerleader)
In Math we are working on shapes and patterns. We are doing well with centers.
It is fun to see how much we have learned in the last month. Working on procedures really pays off.
Thank you,
Kathleen Endsley

Parents:
Thank you for sending apples last week. We had a great variety. We were able to sort them into similar groups, sizes and colors. We eventually ate them all. That was the highlight of the week. The majority of the class enjoyed the sweetness of the Gala and the Red Delicious. The crunch of the Honey crisp was popular. The sour taste of the Granny Smith was a winner with some. All in all it was great fun.
This week in Language Arts we are reading and writing about families and how they change. The book, Peters Chair is about a boy adjusting to having a baby in the family.
Our phonics lessons are targeting beginning sounds of words, such as: mop, ax, man, apple and matching them with the letter.
In Math we will continue working with numbers and sets.
Show and Tell is a constant on Friday. They will not let me forget this activity. Some are creative enough to bring invisible animals.
Star of the Week will start next week. We will go in alphabetic order. The schedule is on back. I will post a few at a time. This is a special week for them. Some ideas: help make a poster to show the class, take them to lunch, visit the class, bring a special show and tell, send a special snack. Ask your child what he/she might like.
Thank you,
Kathleen Endsley

Parents:
Remember Show and Tell is every Friday.
In Language Arts we are working on the words: the I, am, we and can. We learned some sight word chants to go along with the words.
The sound for the week is /a/.
In Math we are still exploring the math manipulatives and working on numbers and sets.
For Science we are studying apples. I would like everyone to bring one apple to school (any size any color). We will be measuring, weighing, describing and eventually tasting the apples.
Monday, during recess, we were fortunate enough to see the destruction of a house across First Street. Was that the topic of conversation at your dinner table?
We are all making progress in respecting the rules of the class and school.
The word for the week is Cooperation. Ask your child about this word.
Thank you,
Kathleen Endsley

Parents:
I would like to thank all of you who attended Open House. It was nice to meet you.
I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
We are working on the rules and procedures of the class and school. The more we go over the procedures the easier it is for everyone later on.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me. My email address is kendsley @ usd259.net or you can call the school and leave a message. I will get back with you after school. Please do not call the room during class. I want to be able to have my complete attention with you when we visit.
I am not sending homework home yet, but I do encourage you to read with your child everyday.
We visited the Library today for the first time.
Questions to ask your child about school:
Who did you introduce today?
What center did you do?
What Special did you have?
What did you write about?
Thank you,
Kathleen Endsley
