MS. HOWARD'S CLASS

Dear Parents,

I am sending home some wonderful ideas to help extend learning at home and reinforce skills we are focusing on this week. Please try to play a few of these games throughout the week.

Penny Exchange

Place pennies in a bag. Have your child reach in and take a handful of pennies and count them together. Then have your child exchange the pennies for other coins. For example, your child can exchange 5 pennies for a nickel or 10 pennies for a dime. Then sort the different coins and have your child count each group. Remind your child how to skip count to count nickels and dimes. This will help your child understand how skip counting is a fast and efficient way of counting money.

Shopping Spree

Together with your child, go shopping at a grocery store, drug store, or a 99¢ store. Look at different items and their prices. Have your child identify if the number is odd or even. Remind your child to look at the ones place to see if a number is even or odd. Then ask your child to look for an item with a price that is even or odd. As an extension, you can add a dollar or subtract a dollar from a price and have your child identify if the new price is even or odd.

Main Idea Movie

Watch a movie or television show with your child. Explain that the main idea of a piece of writing can also apply to movies and television shows. Together, come up with the main idea of the show. Encourage your child to think of details or scenes in the movie that support the main idea.

Pen Pal

Have your child write to a pen pal. Find a family member or friend who lives in a different city, state, or country. This person can be your child’s friend who moved away or a cousin that lives in a different state. The pen pal can be an aunt, uncle, or grandparent or even an old teacher. Set up a correspondence and have your child write letters. He or she can include drawings, poems, stories, or whatever else would be fun to receive in the mail.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Howard and Mrs. Hailey
