Edition 4, September 18, 2007 Just cruise, and read the news

Math/ Investigations: We created multiple books through the 12’s. After identifying patterns, students also figured out that these books could help them with their multiplication and division facts. The rest of theMath/ Investigations: We have completed our first book of Investigations! This week we are studying additional topics that relate to geometry and place value. Student will learn to play the "Transformation Game" which reinforces tonight’s homework. Students will also be identifying the basic geometric shapes. We continue to review place value through the ten thousands place.

Social Studies: This week students will write a final copy of "their" Preamble! This was the activity where we picked out words in the actual Preamble and used modern words so that it makes sense to us! We will continue to learn about Economics! This week our topics include: Conservation of Resources, Goods and Services, and World Trade! Social Studies: On Monday students viewed a short video about our Constitution. They learned about the preamble, the Articles, the Bill of Rights and the Amendments. Students have until Friday to memorize the Preamble for extra credit. A copy can be found in their homework folders. On Thursday we will get back to work on our map skills!

Writing/Grammar

This week students are learning the difference between simple sentences and complex sentences. They are using conjunctions to turn simple sentences into complex sentences.

Vocabulary Words: endless, realistic, universe, astronaut, sensible, protested and paralyzed

Science: Science is integrated through the Language Arts curriculum. We are beginning a short unit on matter. Students will learn about matter and it’s properties.

Reading: This week in reading our theme is "Astronauts". Stories include "Astronauts in Training", "The Astronaut and the Onion" and "The Solar System". Skills tested include vocabulary, character traits, and reading a diagram. Students will take the weekly test Thursday and begin a new theme on Friday.

Tuesday Packets- Due back tomorrow empty! Be sure to read all information that is included! (Classroom, PTO, and office newsletters).

Box Tops- The contest continues through the month of October. The class with the highest number of box tops turned in will earn a prize! Please have your child submit some box tops!

Book Orders- Orders/Money is due tomorrow!

Parent Information

·1 Please make sure your child is completing homework every night. The AR goal for the month of September is to read and pass 2 AR books with at least a 70%. Students should have one book completed.

·2 Math homework is a skill page/activity to reinforce the standards being taught in the classroom. Homework is sent home each Monday through Thursday! It is important that your child shows their work or thinking as they complete nightly homework.

Math/ Investigations: We created multiple books through the 12’s.  After identifying patterns, students also figured out that these books could help them with their multiplication and division facts.  The rest of theMath/ Investigations:  Students are learning about symmetry.  They are making their own designs and deciding if they are a mirror or rotational pattern.  Students then look for lines of symmetry.  Please remember that homework comes home each night that reviews past skills.  We have not had a 100% return yet!

Social Studies: 

Next Monday- September 17 our class will celebrate Constitution Day!  Our Scholastic News this week is all about this subject as well! Students will learn about the meaning of the preamble and the three branches of our government!  We continue learning about the US and its regions.  Students will finish up the Southwest region this week.  

Mission Reporter-

Hi- This is Pilar Ronquillo from Mrs. Murdock and Henning’s class.  We are playing a math game in class called 100-201.  We are reading about National Parks in our reading books.  We are doing cursive writing.  On Thursday, Mrs. Konechy comes in to work with out class.  Most people in class are finished with their related sets.  That’s about it!

Writing/Grammar  

Please ask your child about their poem that they are writing- a cinquain about deserts.  They are typing these in Microsoft word.

Vocabulary Words:  roamed, completed, journey, natural, wildlife 

Science:  Science is integrated through the Language Arts curriculum.  We are currently investigating our thumbprints.  We are making a class chart showing the type of thumbprints represented in our room.

Reading :  This week in reading our theme is “Our National Parks”.  Stories include “A Prehistoric Park”, “Animals Come Home To Our National Parks” and “Saving a National Park”.  Skills tested include vocabulary, main idea, details and compound words.  Students will take the weekly test tomorrow and begin a new theme on Thursday.

Tuesday Packets- Due back tomorrow empty!  Be sure to read all information that is included! (Classroom, PTO, and office newsletters).

Math/ Investigations: We created multiple books through the 12’s.  After identifying patterns, students also figured out that these books could help them with their multiplication and division facts.  The rest of theMath/ Investigations:  Money- Coin recognition, counting the value of, and making dollars with coins starts off our week!  We played the game- Coin Match and enjoyed it! We will be working with a 300 chart- filling in the missing numbers. This chart will guide our lessons for the rest of the week. Your child brought home their first Drop in the Bucket.  This is a weekly review we work on each morning!

Our mystery location was the Little League World Series!  This week students will start learning about the different regions in the United States . Our first assignment will be students color coding states in each region. Then we will start learning about the Southwest. 

 

Mission Reporter-

This is Jake Nespor reporting to you about the first full week of school.  The main highlight was Friday’s Mission Impossible.  During this time, we had to research states on the Internet.  One question had us look up Kansas and Missouri and see which state became a state first.  Other time was spent reviewing out math skills with a Drop in the Bucket worksheet.  Our agenda signing was good.  Most everybody brought them back signed and ready to go!  Our cursive writing was good and neat.  Make next week a good one!

Students are writing a problem/ solution story this week about something that they have lost and then found.

Reading :  This week in reading our theme is “Adapting to Survive”.  Stories include “Living in Alaska ”, “A Walk in the Desert” and “Cinquains”.  Skills tested include vocabulary, main idea, details and context clues.  Students will take the weekly test on Friday.

Camping Agreement Notes were due last Friday.  These notes were handed out at Open House.  If you were unable to attend this information was stapled in your child’s agenda.

Edition 13, November 28, 2006                                                                        Its in the mail, so read the Tale

Math/ Investigations: Students have finished their assessments for our last unit!  We will be introduced to Perimeter and Area this week.  Students continue to review 2 digits by 2 digit multiplication problems.  On Friday students will start on our next Investigation Unit- Different Shapes, Equal Pieces.  Be sure to read the letter about the new unit in today’s Tuesday Packet!

 Social Studies:  We have learned many new things when writing a research paper.  Students reviewed the skill of writing sources correctly.  Do you know that a book and an internet article are not written the same way?  This week we will get back to Geography and learn a few new places on a US map!

This week in reading we are reading a book about Martin Luther King.  Martin wrote a very important speech about his dream.

Writing:  Students are reviewing the correct way to site a source.

Word Wall:  November word wall words are beautiful, before, enough, first, school, their, there, they’re, went, when.

Science:  Science is integrated through the Language Arts curriculum.     We will continue working on our drug and alcohol unit. 

Reading:  This week we our reading unit is titled “People who Made a Difference.   Stories include “It Took Courage”, “My Brother Martin” and “Dear Mrs. Parks”.  Students will take the weekly test on Friday over the skills that were taught in this unit.  Tested skills include:  Vocabulary, Author’s Purpose, Prefixes and Parts of a Letter.

Math-A-Thon Money- Pledge sheets are due TOMMOROW!  I will still accept them through Friday morning!  Remember that the money raised offsets the cost of the camping trip for the entire 4th grade!  Students were given another pledge sheet today!  Students will take the test Friday morning and will bring home their pledge sheets that day!  All pledge money is due December

Math/ Investigations:  Students have completed their 1000 books and are using “landmarks” to find their way around 1,000! Many have discovered that counting by 100’s makes getting around quickly!  We will finish up the week by using our new tool to estimate large numbers playing Close to 1,000 and.  Students will also review estimation to the nearest 100. (Rounding and estimation go together!)  Homework is a nightly occurrence Monday – Friday! Please note that due to our busy schedule all work coming home is NOT corrected!

Social Studies:  Students are continuing to work on their Social Studies district performance.  Their task is to research the five U.S. regions.  This week we are learning how to correctly site the sources that we used for our research.  We are also finishing up our Veteran’s Day Unit that we started last week.

Writing:  This week we continue to work on the district writing assessment.  All students are editing their work and starting to write their final copies!

Science:  Science is integrated through the Language Arts curriculum.  We have read and learned many things about snakes.  We are currently reading about animals and learning if animals would be a friend or a foe to one other.   We will also continue working on our drug and alcohol unit. 

Reading :  This week we are beginning Unit 3.  The topic is on “Animals”.   Stories include “Roadrunners:  Surprising Birds”, “Roadrunner’s Dance” and “Flycatcher and Coyote”.  Students will take the weekly test next Tuesday over the skills that were taught in this unit.  Tested skills include:  Vocabulary, Author’s Purpose, Synonyms and Foreshadowing.
