Dear Room 16 Families,

We have a busy week planned this week in Room 16! This week’s activities will include more review of kindergarten skills and sight words, plus we continue to practice procedures for College Hill.

Math skills this week include finding number combinations (for instance, nine is a combination of seven and two, or it is three groups of three), identifying even and odd and using ordinal number words (first, second, third etc). The number cards from our Math Investigations will be going home, along with directions for some activities to do with these cards at home. Our class activities will also include ordering and representing numbers.

Our Reading activities this week will focus on reviewing Kindergarten Sight Words and letter sounds. We are reviewing and using the short vowels "a" and "i" and "e." Watch for At-Home Word Building Activities to come home, along with a weekly plan of activities which can be done with these words at home to strengthen reading and spelling skills. We have also been working on identifying sequence and characters in fictional text. After this week all Tuesday newsletters will also include a list of words to practice reading and using at home, too.

This Thursday will be our first PD day! That means that during the morning, all first grade teachers will meet and students will have special activities with the Specials teachers. ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR THEIR TENNIS SHOES ON A PD THURSDAY!

Have a fabulous week! There will be no school on September 1 and 2, for Labor Day and an inservice day.

Ms. Nichols
